NVQ Assessor jobs and NVQ assessor training

Welcome to NVQ Assessor Training

What qualifications and/or experience do I need to become an NVQ Assessor?

You will need two things:

  • An NVQ Assessor qualification, also known as the A1 (there is such a thing as an A2 but this is only a part of the A1 and the A2 alone severely limits your ability to operate as an Assessor.  If you have the A1, you have the A2 as well.  Note:  The A1 Qualification is a Unit (component part) of a Level 3 Training NVQ – see below for more details.
  • Sufficient experience and knowledge in the occupational competence area you will be assessing – the details of what is required in terms of experience, knowledge, and sometimes qualifications, are different for each NVQ.  The requirement for Assessors is defined in each NVQ or the Guide to Centres for that NVQ.  For clarity, contact your nearest centre that delivers that NVQ and ask them what experience you need (and how you would need to prove it, to be an Assessor in that NVQ subject.

What do I have to do to get the A1 (NVQ Assessor) qualification?

The A1 NVQ Assessor training covers what Assessors need to know: to plan, mentor, conduct assessments, and manage NVQ candidates through to qualification.   In outline the course comprises:

  • Classroom time – how long depends on the provider
  • 3 Assessments conducted by the trainee, on candidates performing an NVQ Unit competency check – each assessment usually involves an observation of a task and some questioning of the candidate:
    • Assessment 1 – usually observed by you’re a! qualified Trainer
    • Assessment 2 – observed by an independent assessor
    • Assessment 3 – need not be observed
    • You would need access to at least two NVQ candidates over the 3 assessments .
  • Completion of a Portfolio of evidence which will be the basis of the A1 certificate awarded by the Awarding Body

Is the A1 Assessor Qualification specific to one work area?

No.  Your A1 qualification is about assessing techniques, which are the same across all NVQ skill areas. The A1 qualificationl will allow you to assess any NVQ to any level provided you can provide evidence to show a Centre that you have sufficient experience and expertise that you are suitable to be an Assessor.  If in doubt, check the Assessor requirements wither in the NVQ standard, via your own online research, or by calling a Centre and asking them.
